A new watchdog designed to keep an eye on the way supermarkets treat farmers has been welcomed by Preseli Pembrokeshire AM Paul Davies.
Consumer Minister Kevin Brennan announced on Wednesday that the body will come into force on February 4. "I'd like to congratulate the farming unions on winning their 10‐year campaign to get this ombudsman scheme set up," said Mr Davies. "I have been fully supportive of the idea and spoke to the FUW and NFU Cymru about it at length at last year's County Show. During the decade that it has taken to win the fight, the power of the supermarkets has grown enormously. "The next steps are critical as it is decided who will sit on the body and what powers it will have. "I would urge the Government to ensure it has sharp teeth and that is up to the job of both protecting farmers' and shoppers' rights."
