Broadband Support Scheme Welcomed

A new initiative has been launched by the Welsh Assembly Government recently to enable individuals and communities in Wales' broadband not-spot areas to approach service providers directly, with Assembly Government funding.

It is understood that support will be available for up to a maximum of £1,000 for individual premises.

Welsh Tourism Set to Reach New Heights

It has been reported that the number of jobs supported by tourism in the UK is predicted to increase by 264,000 to 2.89 million and the amount of spending per year by overseas residents could almost double from £16bn now to £31bn in 2020. As a result, Welsh tourism is set to boom over the coming months.

Local Assembly Member Paul Davies said, "This is encouraging news given the recent economic times. The tourism industry is of significant importance to the local economy here in Pembrokeshire and I hope that this news will affect Pembrokeshire accordingly.

Murco Refinery Put up for Sale

Following a statement today that Murco's Milford Haven refinery will be put up for sale, Paul Davies AM has expressed concerns over the matter.

Local Assembly Member, Mr Davies said "I am concerned about today's statement regarding the Murco refinery at Milford Haven. Murco is a significant employer in Pembrokeshire and the refinery is of huge importance to the local economy.

Paul Davies AM Joins Opt For Life Campaign

This week, Preseli Pembrokeshire AM Paul Davies pledged support for the Opt for Life campaign which calls for a change to UK legislation to ensure that more organs are available for those on the transplant waiting list.

The scheme would mean that instead of people adding their names to a register if they wanted to donate an organ, they would register if they did not want to donate instead.

AM Visits Exciting Excavation at Nevern Castle

Nevern_Dig_1This week, local Assembly Member Paul Davies visited Nevern Castle to witness the progress of the third season excavation, which is running until July 16th. The excavation work has revealed a large amount of twelfth century building structures and buildings.

The project is run by Nevern Community Council, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and Durham University, funded through Cadw, the Welsh Assembly and the Park Authority. Half-hour guided tours are now available and take place at 2.45pm each day, except for Thursdays or in the event of very poor weather.

Paul Davies AM Debates Rural Competitiveness

Paul Davies AM took part in a Welsh Conservative Rural Competitiveness debate in the Assembly Chamber, this week. The debate, tabled by the Welsh Conservatives was to note the urgent need to improve rural economic competiveness as a means to regenerate rural communities and to ensure that the Welsh Assembly Government makes certain that public services take into account the specific needs of rural Wales.

World Tourism Reception at the Senedd

Paul met with tourism representatives and operators from all over Pembrokeshire to celebrate the industry and to discuss some of the issues facing the tourist industry in the local area.

Residents Still Suffer Loss of TV Channels in Dinas Cross

Dinas Cross residents are continuing to suffer from a loss of channels since the digital TV switchover last summer. After conducting enquiries, Channel 4 believes that co-channel interference between Irish transmissions across the water and the Arqiva commercial multiplexes may be the reason for the loss of channels.

Fishguard Market Celebrates 10 Years

The Market has been held every Saturday morning at the Town Hall in Fishguard between 9am and 1pm. Mr Davies congratulated the Farmers Market on operating successfully over the past ten years.

Local AM Celebrates Welsh Produce at Senedd Event

Asda_eventLocal Assembly Member Paul Davies met with local suppliers at a recent event hosted by Asda at the Senedd. The aim of the event was to celebrate Asda's increasing collaboration with Welsh suppliers and highlight Welsh produce.

Asda spends more than £300m with Welsh businesses every year and currently has 300 Welsh products in its stores sourced from 50 Welsh suppliers with this commitment increasing by another 50 lines by April 2011.

University Plans Must Not Disadvantage Students

RESPONDING to today's Assembly Government statement on the higher education action plan, Shadow Education Minister Paul Davies AM said:

"I welcome the fact the minister wants to drive the median income for universities in Wales above that of the UK as a whole.

"But he also needs to ensure a broad range of subjects continue to be made available to students.

Hospital in Cardigan faces further Problems

Financial negotiations between landowners and the local health board for a new hospital in Cardigan appear to have broken down. The proposed hospital, to be located at the Bath-house site, is thought to be seriously undervalued by the District Valuer according to landowners, and the authorities refuse to increase their offer.

Paul Davies said, "I am very disappointed that things have taken a turn for the worse for the proposed hospital in Cardigan.
